How does Pay as You Earn™ work?
Your account has a balance that fees are added to as they accrue. There are monthly fees depending on the number of products you need and fees associated with premium add-on modules like the digital downloads module.
How does my balance get paid off?
You only pay us when one of two things happen:
- You sell something that is less than or equal to your balance.
- Your balance is more than your monthly rate.
For instance, if you have $7.50 on your balance and sell a product for $5.00, you would receive that money into your PayPal account and then PayPal will send it to us. On the other hand, if you have a $20 a month store, $30 on your account balance and you sell something that's $50, that sale will go to you and then you will pay us a part of that sale to reduce your balance down to $0. You don't have to do anything. It's all automatically handled with PayPal's chained payments system. You don't even have to give us a credit card.
Does my customer ever see you in the transaction?
No, that would be terrible! Your customer only pays you, and only if you owe money towards your balance, do you pay us. Either way though, your customer doesn't even know we're there.
When I pay you, do I get a record of my original sale in PayPal?
Yes! Incredible isn't it? You receive the money, then it automatically pays us. Therefore if someone needed to return something, you can find the transaction and refund them their money. Not that anyone would ever want to return your beautiful creation.
Do you still charge me my monthly fee if I don't sell anything?
No! We have no rollover. If a month goes by where you don't sell anything, we wipe your monthly fee from your balance.
Okay, but what about digital sales?
The premium digital downloads module is pay per usage. You can upload as much as you want and only when your customer purchases a digital item from your store and redeems it, will a fee be added to your account balance. The premium digital downloads module charges 1.5 ¢ per 10 MB of redemption. There are no fees for file uploads, file storage, testing downloads, conversion of lossless audio to various formats, and we never take a percentage of your sale.
Do I get charged if I give away my digital music for free?
No! If you give away your digital music for free, we don't charge you anything. You don't have to buy credits or sell a minimum amount either, just sign up and give it away. You can even set a minimum price of $0.00 and let your customers pay what they want. For those who don't pony up, you won't get charged when they redeem their download.
Wait a second, how can you afford to not charge for that?
Well, we know it's risky, but we'd rather just keep things simple. That being said, if your name is Lady Gaga and you're thinking about using Limited Run to give away your music for free, please for the love of god, go somewhere else.
